What happens when you add technology to a treasure hunt? You get the best STEM game on the planet! Geocaching is a global game that combines handheld GPS devices, hiking and treasure hunting. You do need a GPS device to play (yes, there is a smartphone app for that!) but the game itself is pretty simple. Just enter the geocache coordinates into your GPS device and navigate your way around the longitude and latitude to find the prize: a cache filled with trinkets.
If you are a volunteer with Girl Scouts of Central Maryland, you can sign up for geocaching training to learn how to use the GPS and take a troop/group on a cache hunt. If you are interested in volunteer training in geocaching contact our Adult Learning Services Coordinator, Valerie Brooks at vbrooks@gscm.org.
According to Geocaching.com, there are currently 2,462,924 active geocaches worldwide, so happy searching!
