Sarah, a Girl Scout Ambassador from Catonsville, hosted a Teen Wellness Fair as her Girl Scouts Gold Award project. Sarah chose this project, called Project LYFE (Love Yourself For Eternity), because she wanted to provide resources for teens to overcome the issues that that are faced with today. Over the past couple of years, Sarah has watched many friends struggle with eating disorders, self-injury, and suicidal thoughts, all as a result of the stress and pressure placed on them by society.Project LYFE provided these resources in a festival atmosphere that consisted of two local bands and 2 dynamic speakers (one on stress managements, and the other on self-esteem and personal struggles with an eating disorder). In addition, 12 local mental and behavioral health organizations were represented, providing information and activities for the attendees. The evening was a great success with close to 40 teenagers attending. In addition, Sarah has already been approached by two separate individuals, requesting that she replicate this event for their communities/organizations. This highlights the importance and need for providing such events for today’s teenagers. For more information and to see pictures from the event, please visit the Project LYFE facebook page (www.facebook.com/ProjectLYFE). |
