QUIZ: Is Your Daughter Ready for Summer Camp?

Trying to decide what kind of summer camp is right for your first-time camper?

While there’s no hard and fast rule for when she should be ready, these quizzes ask some important questions that can help you make this exciting (and sometimes daunting) decision!


Directions for CAMPERS:
Choose your answer on a scale of 1-3, that best describes how you feel. Add each number you choose and check your answer range at the bottom of the page.

Do you like having lots of fun? 1 2 3 

Do you enjoy sleepovers at friends’ and family’s houses? 1 2 3 

Can you shower on your own and maintain your own personal hygiene, like brushing your teeth and combing your hair? 1 2 3

Do you enjoy outdoor activities, like sports, rock climbing, and swimming? 1 2 3 

Can you go without TV, a phone or internet for an extended amount of time? 1 2 3

Can you see a mosquito, grasshopper or small mouse without running and screaming? 1 2 3 

Can you maintain, pack and carry your own gear? 1 2 3

Do you like to make new friends? 1 2 3

Do you enjoy sleeping outside and listening to the sounds of nature? 1 2 3

Do you like to have a choice in the things you do? 1 2 3 

Can you use the bathroom in a non-flushing toilet? 1 2 3

Are you ready to sleep in a new environment with brand new friends and your counselors nearby? 1 2 3

Will you help with camp kapers like sweeping your tent, setting tables, and picking up your own trash? 1 2 3

Are you ready to use your imagination to create new games and activities? 1 2 3

Can you live by the Girl Scout Law? 1 2 3

Are you REALLY excited about going to camp? 1 2 3

Results:

16 – 24 You would enjoy a day camp, but it might be a good idea to wait until next year for resident/overnight camp.

25 – 34 You might enjoy a Mini Camp or Camper Sampler program with a buddy.

35 – 48 You must be an experienced camper! It sounds like your ready for resident camp!

Can you relax and enjoy yourself when your daughter sleeps overnight at a friend’s or family member’s house? 1 2 3

Would you be OK communicating with your daughter by one-way email or one-way snail-mail? 1 2 3

Would you be willing to attend an info session to learn about camp and meet the Camp Director? 1 2 3

Would you be willing to bring your camper along to an open house to see the camp and meet the staff ? 1 2 3

Are you prepared to be away from your daughter for several days? 1 2 3

Are you comfortable with your daughter living and playing in an outdoor, rustic setting where the weather may change? 1 2 3

Are you willing to work with your daughter so she will be comfortable using a sleeping bag, mess kit, and a flashlight? 1 2 3

Do you believe Girl Scout camp provides girls with a fun and rewarding experience that builds skills, self-worth and independence? 1 2 3

Are you willing to entrust the Camp Director and counselors with the care of your daughter? 1 2 3

Are you confident in your daughter’s ability to take care of herself, like brushing her teeth and washing her hands? 1 2 3

Are you confident in your daughter’s ability to sleep in a new environment with brand new friends? 1 2 3

Results:

11 – 16 It might be a good idea for you to wait until next year to send your daughter to resident camp. Day camp is a good option. You may benefit from giving your daughter smaller opportunities to exercise independence before she leaves home for several days.

17 – 24 You are ready to send your daughter to camp for a Mini Camp or Camper Sampler session. You may feel more confident if you attend the open house and follow tips in the Parent Guide (sent with the confirmation packet).

25 – 33 You are ready to send your daughter to resident camp sessions that last a week. You are confident in her abilities and are willing to help prepare her for camp.
