G.I.R.L. Spotlight: Lily’s Community Service Projects

Girl Scout Lily knows how to take the lead like a Girl Scout. She’s is a G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)™, who, on top of selling 2,503 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies last season (and averaging over 1,000 boxes for the last 7 years), is always seeking new ways to make the world a better place.

How do we know this?

Lily has been recognized not once, not twice or even three times for her service to her community. So far, Lily has received 6 awards. In addition to earning her Girl Scout Bronze and Silver Awards,  she is a two-time recipient of the President’s Volunteer Service Award,  was a Distinguished Finalist for the Prudential Spirit of Community Award, and, most recently, she was awarded the Daily Points of Light Award for her efforts with the The Blue Ribbon Project, which was the subject of her Silver Award.

To broaden her reach and get others involved in giving back, Lily created her own Facebook page, Lily’s Community Service Projects. On her page she encourages others to get involved, shares other Girl Scout’s projects and keeps everyone updated on what she’s doing.

When asked about her inspiration to start her Facebook page, Lily had this to say:

“I feel it is very important to give back to the community and I have found that it isn’t always about finding people who want to help. Often people don’t know how to help or where to start. So I started my page to help people find ways they can help and get involved in the community.”

Her main goal of the page is to “help people become aware of all the different ways they can help.” Lily offers project ideas that require little or no cost, like recycling products to help make buddy benches or by donating time to build backpacks for abused and neglected children. “I have a strong desire to help others and make them aware that it isn’t always a big thing that has to be done to make the world a better place. If everyone pitches in a little it can make a big impact on our community.”

What is Lily working on now?

On June 2nd, Lily is hosting a Stand Up To Cancer benefit show featuring singers, dancers and speakers, to create awareness of cancer research and to rejoice with those who have survived the battle. She hopes to highlight how important it is to find a cure and comfort those currently enduring their journey. All of the the proceeds of this event will go to cancer research.
