The August 2019 VINE

vappledesk.jpgWe are all working to prepare for the new Girl Scout year. We are looking forward to working with each of you to develop the next generation of women leaders!  We are finalizing programs and continuing our efforts to recruit and place girls into troops so that they can have a great year of skill-building, exploration, and fun.

I want to say thanks to each of you who worked to get your girls and troops ready for fall through our Spring Renewal campaign. Through your efforts, almost 7,000 girls will receive the Spring Renewal patch.

I especially want to thank girls and their parents for being first in line to renew.

We are pleased to share the results of the campaign and recognize the top-performing Service Units:

Two Service Units achieved 100% of their goal:

  • SU637 Led by Service Unit Manager Tracy Cannan in Anne Arundel
  • SU675 Led by Service Unit Manager Denise Vera  in Harford County

These service units did an amazing job and I want to thank each member of the team for encouraging families to renew.

There were six other service units I would like to recognize for achieving 90+% of their goal:

  • SU680 led by Anne Gibbons and Megan Bennett-Marx in Harford County @ 97%
  • SU677 led by Terri Hartman in Harford County @ 96%
  • SU672 led by Mary Jo Custance in Carroll County @ 95%
  • SU651 led by Pat Disharoon in Baltimore County @ 95%
  • SU649 led by Karen Meyers in Baltimore County @ 91%
  • SU666 led by Ursula Sherwin in Carroll County @ 90%

Thank you for all that you do to ensure Girl Scouts in central Maryland have great Girl Scout experiences.  We could not serve our 20,000+ girl members without Y-O-U.

Yours in Girl Scouting,
Violet M. Apple
Chief Executive Officer

Girls Scouts Cyber Challenge – A great way for girls to learn about cybersecurity!

Girl Scouts of Central Maryland has been selected to be among 19 councils that will pilot a new program developed in partnership with Raytheon.  On October 19th all 19 councils will simultaneously participate in GSUSA’s first national computer science program and Cyber Challenge. The goal of the program is to interest girls in computer science careers in fields like cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, robotics, and data science to help diversify the STEM workforce.

At the Cyber Challenge girls will put their programming and cyber skills to use. Here’s the scenario: There’s been a hack on a moon colony, and we need your help to fix things and save everyone! At this one-of-a-kind event, you’ll be part of an incident response team that must find out who hacked the system and how to stop them. And you’ll work with other brave, innovative girls to solve challenges that parallel skills used by cybersecurity professionals in real life. Don’t worry—no previous cybersecurity experience is necessary to join in the fun!

Before the challenge begins, girls will need to complete the Think Like a Programmer Journey and Cybersecurity Badges for their Girl Scout level. Badges can be earned as individuals or troops. Questions or, if you would like to serve as a coach for the day, email

When: October 19th, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Who: Cadettes-Ambassadors

Where: Delta Hotel, Hunt Valley

Cost: $5

Both forms must be completed by the individual holding the position in order for the troop and TCM to be eligible to sell cookies and gain access to the Smartcookies ordering system.

 Insignia Price increase

Due to a rise in material and production cost, GSUSA has to increase the pricing on a number of insignia items. It has been approximately 4 years since any price change despite the fact that GSUSA has received incremental price increases from vendors.  To show our appreciation to our customers, GSCM has decided to keep our current pricing through the end of the 2019 Girl Scout year.  We will honor the current pricing for items purchased at our stores or via our store email  We encourage you to take advantage of this special offer for items in stock only. Not applicable to backorder or online orders.
